Pop Culture Roundup for May 24-31: Of Cleos, Monkees, and More

by Karen A. Romanko

I’m rounding out the month of May with a pop culture potpourri: a couple of TV Cleopatras, a little TV quiz I like to run on Facebook occasionally, and a Monkee anniversary. If you try the quiz, dated May 28 below, you may want to avert your eyes from the next entry, May 29, because it has the answers.

May 24: Cleopatra (Jayne Meadows) having a chat with Thomas Paine (Joseph Sirola) on Meeting of Minds, an innovative PBS series from 1977. Another photo for my book in progress, Historical Women on Scripted Television (McFarland).

May 27: Still researching Cleopatra for my book in progress Historical Women on Scripted Television (McFarland). Here’s a newspaper ad for the “Cleo and the Babe” episode of Voyagers! (1982). An English-speaking Cleo (Andrea Marcovicci) is transported to New York, where she works with Lucky Luciano to kidnap Babe Ruth. (Don’t ask.) I saw Andrea at a Scarecrow and Mrs. King Anniversary event in 2018, and she was more beautiful than ever.

May 28: The eyes have it! Classic cops and detectives from American TV series, 1950s through 80s. Who are they?

May 29: Here are the answers to yesterday‘s “eye test,” and the photos I used for cropping. Beverly Garland of Decoy, Pierce Brosnan of Remington Steele, Teresa Graves of Get Christie Love, Rock Hudson of McMillan & Wife, and Anne Francis of Honey West.

May 31: On this day 55 years ago, filming began for The Monkees TV series. (Oh, no, not feeling old at all.) In a scant few months, Monkeemania would rock my teenybopper world. Such a fun time of life.

  1. Sorry for the delay, its been a bit hectic here. Thank you for sharing, I too got to meet Andrea in 2018, she was a lovely lady. She didn't have a main meal instead I filled her plate with a selection of desserts..
My magazine for pop culture growing up was an English one called "Look In".
Some great ladies of history will be in your book 👍

    1. Since I arrived late for the anniversary celebration, I didn’t really meet Andrea, but I ran into her in the ladies’ room later. A little awkward to meet a celebrity for the first time in the loo. We exchanged smiles. She looked lovely.
