Pop Culture Roundup for April: Mini-musings on New Tricks, Sundance, and More

by Karen A. Romanko

This month I am starting a new feature on Small Screen Pop, a roundup of my recent social media posts about pop culture. They are an eclectic, decades-spanning mix for April, covering classics like the 1956 film Giant and recent fare, such as a 2020 episode of Father Brown. Here they are in chronological order.

April 8: I love this story about Dennis Waterman during the filming of “The Rock,“ a two-part episode of New Tricks. On the DVD for season 10, there is a short documentary called “New Tricks in Gibraltar.” Director Brian Grant says that Dennis was “mobbed by a bunch of pensioners” during the shooting, and they had to take Dennis off the street and hide him in the shops until the crowds died down. That’s star power! 🌟 Here he is in Gibraltar with Amanda Redman and Denis Lawson. 💗

April 8: Another nice photo acquisition for my book in progress, Historical Women on Scripted Television. A 1976 press photo for the TV movie Amelia Earhart, with actress Susan Clark on the right and the real Amelia on the left. ✈️

April 12: I thoroughly enjoyed “The Tower of Lost Souls,” the last episode of Father Brown’s season 8, which I watched on DVD last night. I literally laughed out loud five or six times. Don’t want to reveal spoilers, but, shall we say, former cast members were used to great effect in this episode. “You’re with me!“ 😂

April 15: Great 1969 lineup! Watched them all. 🌸

April 17: Paul Newman and Robert Redford playing Ping-Pong in Mexico during the filming of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1968. Oh, my!

April 30: RIP, Johnny Crawford. He had been battling Alzheimer’s in recent years. Most in my generation will remember him from The Rifleman with Chuck Connors. A little more of childhood falls away. Condolences to his family and friends. 😔

  1. Lovely round up. I enjoyed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid it was a good film.
Nice to know that Dennis still has the wow factor even if he is being chased by pensioners. The episodes from Gibraltar were great. Some of these programmes I will have to look into.
Oh and I can see all your photos x
